Evropský den jazyků

Cultural diversity, multilingualism and life-long language learning are the focal points of our language event on the occasion of the European Day of Languages. We invite you to visit us on Friday, 24th of September and on Monday, 27th September between 8.00 and 12.30 in the Společenske Centrum to celebrate this day with us.

It will be day of fun and laughter, quizzes and games, singing, playing and obviously learning! You will be invited to take part in language activities and games and you will have the unique opportunity to learn some words in European languages from native speakers (German, Polish and French). That all and even more await you!

And remember: language is a key. Languages open doors!

We were in Vamberk

Paris, Milan, New York, Tokyo are famous world fashion centres and that goes without saying. But in small city like Vamberk - is it possible to touch on fashion world? Why not! On Tuesday we took part in fashion show in Vamberk and we really enjoyed it! It was something new and attractive for us to see collection of dresses mixed up with lace accessories and ornaments.

Additionally we did some sightseeing in Muzeum Krajki. We saw there an exhibition dedicated to the lace-making of course. To my knowledge lace from Vamberk has grand and long tradition and is recognised and valued not only in Czech Republic but also abroad. But this visit and short film on display at the museum we watched awakened me to the seriousness of the making of laces. We were all impressed!
Lace-making is an ancient craft. Today in the age of machine-made lace it looks quite different but the classic handicraft is a challenging job: you have to be patient, split-second and concentrated.

In conclusion: That's not true small cities haven't a rich cultural life and nothing happens there. You just have to look around and take every opportunity - just like we did. The fashion show was well worth visiting.

My first week in Czech Republic

I'm the third volunteer here in OKO for year 2010/2011. I arrived in Prague last Monaday where I met Christine and Joanna. Then we went for a walk around Prague to see something of the city e.g. the famous charles bridge. After spending some hours in Prague we took the train to Rychnov. And I was really excited to see where I'm going to live for next year.
In the following days Joanna and Christine showed me Rychnov and on Saturday we went for a trip to Pardubice. Of course we visited shopping mall :) but we also had to buy some stuff for our flats. We had lunch in czech restaurant and after that we visited a market, where you could buy typical czech food or some handicrafts and also they offered many activities for children. So it was quite nice to see something of czech culture.
On Sunday the weather was really nice so we decided to have a picnic in the park of Rychnov. All in all I really enjoyed my first week in Rychnov and I'm looking forward to next weeks.

Open day @ Oko

On Friday was open day at OKO - centre and Joanna und I had the task to occupy the kids while their parents inform theirselves about the new courses in OKO. We prepared some small games and some handicraft works. It wasn't always easy to understand the kids but somehow we managed the communication and could even learn some new czech words from the kids. It was really a nice afternoon :)

Jarmark

Jarmark in Rychnov - of course we didn't miss it!
We visited it on Saturday and had great day there. We watched some performances and we were lucky, because some of them were without text (-> no understanding problems^^). Furthermore we enjoyed the little shops there and made some small shopping :).

Some pictures from our day at Jarmark:
